The Super Tempo

"It's not about how fast you ride, but how hard."

Cyclists, whether racers, tourists or fanatics can gather the meaning and weight from our namesake. Riding tempo is the riding that lots of us do – right at the cusp of what's difficult, but not so impossible that you can't sustain the speed for the long haul.

That is The Super Tempo.

I’ve long admired the work of Rick Hunter who makes lovely bikes out of Watsonville, CA. His frames are beautiful and straddle that fine line between elegance, class and utility. They’re pretty but not so pretty that you’d only ride his frames on Sundays. Rick makes the kinds of bikes that look like you’d want to ride them for days, race them on weekends and do it all over again. I’ll say it here: a CX Hunter frame will likely be my next bike, whenever that may be. In addition to building some of the best dirt rigs I’ve ever seen, this recent beauty pictured above from Hunter’s Flickrstream immediately caught my eye. While this looks to be the kind of bike that the Portland builders seem to be churning out, it was nice to see a touring rig come out of Hunter’s shop with the Hunter details — I can’t get enough of his rear monostays!
